LiFePO4 or Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) as a battery component is a relatively recent discovery. However, scientists have been applying lithium in experiments since the 1970’s.

Our current lifestyle involves the use of various electronic devices and tool and rechargeable LiFePO4batteries have proven to be an important part of our daily life. It seems LFP is the most efficient battery design and it may become the power source of every gadget we use soon.

It begs us to ask, how will it affect us? What is the effect of lithium iron phosphate in our society? If I am to answer that in one word, I would say - safe.

Lithium iron phosphate batteries are very safe alternatives to other batteries of its kind. If you’re living under a rock, you might not have heard about reports of mobile phone’s exploding because of overcharging.

The recent number of recalled devices and reports of batteries exploding are quite alarming indeed. Faulty batteries and product design can end up causing horrible accidents.

This is not the case with Lithium Iron (not ion) Phosphate batteries. LFP batteries are rigorously tested. Its most promising characteristic is its tolerance to overcharging. Plus, the sturdy LFP is also longer lasting than most batteries that start to deteriorate after only 300 cycles of charging.

According to the research team of Harbin University of Science and Technology in China, LFP is safe and will not explode even in worst case scenarios. We must also note that the battery made of the lithium iron phosphate compound can operate and withstand high temps compared to other batteries.

Being thermally stable, the battery is safe and won’t expose consumers to heat related incidents. LFP remains cool even while charging compared to other rechargeable batteries.

LFP is eco-friendly

If we can remove the lead in batteries by using only LFP batteries, then it would be a significant positive impact on our society and on nature as well.

LFP batteries will not cause any pollution since it does not have heavy metals or lead which is poisonous. Using LFP batteries instead of lead acid batteries will be beneficial to everyone. That is, of course, if it is recycled properly.

The heavy metals in other batteries cause environmental damage and pose a threat to us all. If our energy products are made with safe materials like the LFP battery, then it would be of great help to campaign against climate change and environmental protection.

LFP batteries are non-toxic

The battery is chemically stable and safe for consumers. Even the powder from this kind of battery is non-toxic. We should also note that the stability of LFP batteries is incredible, to say the least. It can be charged with lead acid battery chargers if necessary.

LFP Batteries can power electric vehicles

The commercialization of LFP means it will become cheaper. And the once expensive electric cars and motorbikes will also become more accessible to the general public. If we can eliminate gasoline and diesel fueled cars and replace them with electric vehicles - we lessen the pollution in the air and the need for fossil fuels.
